Issue 7 - Fall 2013

A young couple rummages though the ashes of their relationship. When couples split apart, promises that were made are then broken, and in Papel Picado, the couple’s broken relationship crumbles in a surreal dreamlike landscape, merging elements of their courtship, break up, and moments of their life, including the unborn nameless ghost children that could have been. Papel Picado, in Spanish, means perforated paper, and is a reflection on the person’s soul and the idea that we are all paper getting written on, torn up and taped, and we age in time. I have noticed that my life gets defunct every five or so years, when I’m at the beginning of a new life and the ending of the last. I came up with the idea of the film back in 2009.
